Lighting specialists work with residential and commercial clients to evaluate and advise on the best lighting options for a particular space or furnishings. To pursue a career as a lighting specialist, you need an associate or bachelor’s degree from a school accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) or the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Lighting specialists also obtain certification from the American Lighting Association (ALA) by completing coursework and an examination. Additional qualifications include experience in the electrical contracting or lighting field, customer service skills, and knowledge of lighting audit software.
